Here Come The Holidays: Building Traditional Support
Do you have holiday memories that make you feel safe and warm in your heart? For many of the children you are working with have not had this experience. The holidays are marketed as safe and happy filled with positive traditions and gifts. However, out of every four children, one child is living in chaos impacted by substance misuse. Many have been removed from the home and have lost connection with the people they relied on. As we enter the winter holiday season and explore the variety of traditions and associated rituals that have special meaning for our families and communities, we need to remember these events, no matter how small, and identify how we link and bond as a “family.” However, the plans often include the use of alcoholic beverages and/or other drugs and for many, this is not a healthy or meaningful time. This is especially true as many families and communities have experienced an increase in substance use disorder and violence. In your time with children, you can support a meaningful holiday and in many cases, for the entire family. Join us in revisiting the value of tradition and explore ways you can help to build healthy memories all year long in support of family and community.
