A CASA Volunteer's Impact
Over 16,000 children will experience an open child abuse or child neglect case in Illinois this year. Some children enter foster care, some children remain with family, and some children are waiting on a safe, permanent, and loving home. CASA Volunteers stand by these children and ensure that their voices and best interests are protected while they navigate the court and child welfare systems.

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteers are everyday people who step forward to become a voice for a child in their community. After receiving comprehensive training, CASA Volunteers are appointed by local judges to advocate for a child's best interests in the courtroom and beyond.
Unlike many professionals in the child welfare system who may manage large caseloads, CASA Volunteers focus on one child or sibling group at a time. The duties of a CASA Volunteer include: • Building a trusted, consistent relationship with the child • Communicating with the adults in a child's life (biological families, teachers, foster families, and professionals) • Providing fact-based recommendations directly to the judgeCASA Volunteers do not need any special experience with law or child welfare, but are expected to review documents, communicate verbally & in writing, and advocate professionally on behalf of a child. For most local CASA programs, CASA Volunteers must:
• Be over 21 years of age. • Complete CASA Pre-Service Training. • Pass a Background Check. • Be willing to commit to the responsibilities of being a CASA Volunteer. However, being a CASA Volunteer is a long-term commitment. CASA volunteers commit to advocating for their assigned child or set of siblings until the kids find a safe, permanent and loving home. The average case that is assigned a CASA Volunteer may stay open for 12-24 months, but could be shorter or longer depending on the circumstances.
Generally, being a CASA Volunteer is a flexible volunteer opportunity. CASA Volunteers work alongside local CASA program staff, who provide training, supervision, and support throughout the volunteer's journey.

CASA Volunteers make a lifelong difference for children in our state. Their advocacy improves ensures that children's needs and desires are being recognized in the court system.
